Chicago Filmmakers presents the 28th Onion City Experimental Film + Video Festival Thursday-Sunday, March 8-11 at our new location (5720 N. Ridge Ave.; enter from Hollywood Ave.).

Onion City features two dynamic feature-length films and seven shorts film programs of diverse and amazing work, a grouping of some of the best experimental work currently being made.

The Opening Night film is the first feature by Basma Alsharif, an alumna of the festival and a graduate of the University of Illinois at Chicago. Currently based in Los Angeles, Alsharif's film, OUROBOROS, continues her powerful, poetic, and political exploration of her Middle East origins and heritage (born in Kuwait of Palestinian origin) and her identity as a diasporic person, raised in France and the U.S.

On Saturday, Onion City presents INCENSE, SWEATERS & ICE by Martine Syms, who also has Chicago connections, having graduated from the School of the Art Institute. Syms. Based in Los Angeles, she describes herself as a "conceptual entrepreneur" and works in a variety of media, bringing together ideas about African-American identity, economic models, technology, performance, and questions of visibility/invisibility within culture. INCENSE is an experimental narrative about surveillance and the targeting of black bodies.

The seven shorts programs feature work by established makers, many exciting new filmmakers, and ones who have been garnering extensive festival play worldwide and acclaim. In addition to Basma Alsharif and Martine Syms, there is a strong local presence in the shorts programs as well, with more than a dozen current and former Chicagoans represented.
