October 19, 2012 by Mike McNamara
Premiering at Chicago’s Landmark Theater tonight (Oct. 19), SMASHED is a comedy-drama directed by James Ponsoldt (who also co-wrote the film with Susan Burke) and staring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul.
Kate (Winstead) and Charlie (Paul) have a marriage that thrives on their shared love of music, laughter and getting smashed. But Kate’s behavior spirals downhill affecting her job as an elementary teacher and generally making her asocial. The film follows her confrontation with sobriety and how she is forced to face the lies she’s told to cover her behavior as well as the nature of her relationship with Charlie.
It’s world premiere was at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival where it won the U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Independent Film Production. It was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics on Aug. 8.
