April 12, 2013 by Mike McNamara
MAGNOLIA PICKS UP SWANBERG: The Wagner/Cuban Company’s Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American distribution rights to Chicago writer-director Joe Swanberg’s DRINKING BUDDIES, starring Olivia Wilde (who also executive produced the film), Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston. I thoroughly enjoyed the BUDDIES world premiere last month at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival, excited for you guys to see this one. Magnolia Pictures is planning a theatrical release for later this year.
LET’S CHAT: A father afflicted by photophobia searches for his daughter lost in the world of online adult chat. What’s photophobia, you ask? Well, you’ll have to ask director Boris Wexler yourself. Or google it. Wexler is currently filming this third feature alongside DP Fred Miller and producers Lucy Manda, Jessica Bahowick and Paul Peditto (who also wrote the screenplay). The cast is loaded with talented Chicago theatre actors, including Sheryl Graeff, Caitlin Collins and Rick Peeples. CHAT is Escape Films' third feature, following FALL AWAY and ROUNDABOUT AMERICAN. News about the film can be found at https://www.facebook.com/EscapeFilmsChicago.
TABLES STILL OPEN: Filming continues through the spring for the latest improv indie from Jack C. Newell, OPEN TABLES. This feature is loaded with top improv talent around town, including Beth Lacke, Susan Messing, Kate Duffy, T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi. Keep up with OPEN TABLES at https://www.facebook.com/OpenTablesMovie, coming to a restaurant near you.
FREUD NOT SLIPPING: The feature FREUDIAN SLIP wraps this month, directed by Mick Weber, executive produced by Ben (who also wrote the screenplay) and Ravi Lumpkin are the executive producers for Big Toe Films. FREUDIAN SLIP and the good folks at PR Casting put more than 40 Chicago actors to work, including the talented Elizabeth Laidlaw, Jane Alderman, Matt Holzfeind, Moussam Makkar and Sandra Delgado. This feature will be completing its post-production in Illinois as well, which is always a good thing, more news coming soon!
AT ANY THEATER THIS MAY: The latest feature AT ANY PRICE from acclaimed director Ramin Bahrani, filmed in Illinois and Iowa, hits Chicago theaters Friday, May 3rd. I’ll have an interview with Ramin and his lead actor Dennis Quaid coming up for you in Filmmaker Focus later this month! If you’d like to check out some other recent interviews, stop by http://screenmag.com/columns/filmmaker-focus.
Is your film heading into production? Please drop me a note at firstname.lastname@example.org and tell me all about it. I’ll do my best to include it in “The Call Sheet.”
