SHAMELESS Goes for Emmy Tonight, Shoots This Week
August 25, 2014 by Mike McNamara
It's a busy week for SHAMELESS. First things first, Chicago natives William H. Macy and Joan Cusack go for the series' first Emmy tonight, with Macy nominated (finally!) for Lead Actor in a Comedy and Cusack up for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series... for the fourth consecutive year! On top of that, the show has two units shooting in Chicago all week, as filming for its fifth season is in full swing.
Earlier today, William H. Macy commented to USA TODAY about the curious "comedy" label on the alcoholism-infused show, saying that comedy and drama overlap in many productions. "The things I like are usually 50-50, comedy and drama. To really nail a joke, you've got to put people in a different mood so it hits them. The same thing with a devastating moment. It's nice if it comes out of a bit of levity," Macy said. "And it's life. Life is tough. (The SHAMELESS characters) are at the bottom, so it's not a laughing matter. On the other hand, we love them so much because they find the humor in it."
The Emmys air tonight at 7 p.m. Central on NBC. This year's Emmys host is another actor with Midwest roots, Evanston native and Northwestern grad Seth Meyers.
