Bryen Hensley Answers Five Questions

In the latest installment of our regular running feature, Bryen Hensley, Lead Sound Designer at Resolution answers Five Questions With SCREEN.

SCREEN: Can you cook? If so, what is your go-to dish?

HENSLEY: My Mom was a Home Economics teacher when I was growing up so learning to cook, sew, iron was a must in our house. My go-to dish would have to be chili. My Mom's recipe of course. Usually make some in the winter when football has started on Sundays.

SCREEN: What's your most-played iPod track?

HENSLEY: I grew up in the 70's and 80's so heavy metal is a big part of my music likes. Anything by Kiss and VanHalen. Recently though I've been into Dave Grohl and Foo Fighters. He made a documentary recently called Sound City and on the sound track is a song called Mantra. Been playing that a lot lately.

SCREEN: Describe your perfect Sunday.

HENSLEY: Perfect Sunday goes like this. Get up about 6am with my two dogs (Puzzle and Lilly). Grab the sunday paper and a big glass of orange juice and sit on the back patio and read the paper. Yes I still like an actual newspaper. My two sons, Luke and Jake, usually get up around 8am or so. Sunday is French toast day so I make them french toast and bacon for breakfast. Once in awhile we switch it up with blue pancakes but most of the time its french toast. Then the rest of the day is just hanging out with my wife and kids. Any day with them is a perfect day. If its the fall, then watching football is a bonus.

SCREEN: Cubs or Sox?

HENSLEY: I'm a football guy so I don't really care much. Plus i'm a transplant from Michigan so I don't have the deep rooted love for either team. But if you make me choose then Cubs for sure.

SCREEN: What's your favorite place to spend: a weekend? a week? two weeks?

HENSLEY: For a weekend, definitely camping. We just camped at Starved Rock last weekend, it was a blast. For a week, probably home in Michigan. I grew up near Saugatuck, so we try to get there as much as we can. For two weeks, its not even close, Africa. I've been all over east and southern Africa and its just spectacular. My wife is from South Africa and works for a safari company so we spend a lot of time there. I could talk for days about Africa but suffice to say if anyone gets the chance to go they should go, they won't be disappointed.

BONUS QUESTION:

SCREEN: What's your favorite gadget?

HENSLEY: I'm a complete nerd when it comes to gadgets, no problem admitting that. One of my favorites is my Zoom Audio Recorder. I take it everywhere with me, especially on trips.
Being a sound designer, I'm always listening for cool things no matter where i'm at. Just this morning I was going down the back stairs here at the studio and I heard some deep rumble sound I've never heard before. I ran and got my Zoom to record it but by the time I got back it had stopped. Should have used my other favorite gadget, my Iphone! Just for the record, the best sound I've captured was a pride of 23 lions roaring in Botswana!
