ROOSTER TEETH Crowdfunds $1M, Smashes Indiegogo Record

Austin-based production company Rooster Teeth, nationally famous for its web series RED VS. BLUE and RWBY, as well as several other live action shorts and animated and gaming web series took to crowdfunding to finance its 1st feature film called LAZER TEAM. The indiegogo campaign, with a goal of $650,000, was started on June 6th. By midnight on Monday morning (June 9th), they had already hit $1 million.

That’s a million dollars in one weekend! They have broken the record for quickest funded film on the indiegogo site. By Friday morning (June 13th, a week after it opened) it is at $1,220,358 and steadily climbing, with a closing date of July 6th. As of Monday morning (June 16th), they have raised $1,271,402. It’s safe to say that Rooster Teeth’s fans (their youtube channels have over 3 billion viewers, collectively) REALLY want to see this movie made and are doing everything they can to make that goal a reality.

LAZER TEAM is the brainchild of Rooster Teeth founders Burnie Burns and Matt Hullum and is a live-action sci-fi comedy that takes place decades after a message from alien civilization has been decoded. Shooting is scheduled to take place in August and September in Austin and New Mexico. A new drama pilot for Amazon Studios, produced by Shaun Cassidy and starring Mena Suvari (AMERICAN BEAUTY) has started shooting in Austin this month. Produced by Alcon Entertainment, HYSTERIA centers around Suvari who plays Dr. Logan Harlow, a neurologist/psychiatrist at The University of Texas Medical School who returns to her hometown of Austin to investigate a strange new epidemic affecting high school girls and spreading through technology. Casting calls are taking place now for extras and featured roles and shooting will take place through the end of the month.

Also, starring alongside Suvari is James McDaniel (NYPD BLUE), who plays Dr. Carl Sapsi, a local Austin doctor who is shocked by the new outbreak and works with Harlow to stop it. Jenessa Grant (REIGN) and Asjha Cooper (SECRET DIARY OF AN AMERICAN CHEERLEADER) are also attached.

The new-ish El Rey network, created by Robert Rodriguez, has announced that they will call Texas home, as they move their production and corporate headquarters to Austin, TX. This is the first time an entertainment network will be formally based in Texas. The local and state governments are thrilled with this decision, as it will most likely boost the local economy and hopefully bring more productions to Texas. Rodriguez is no stranger to Austin or Texas; he films most of his projects in the lone star state capitol. In fact, we just announced in a recent edition of Only In Texas that the FROM DUSK TILL DAWN TV series has been picked up by the network for its second season and filming is currently underway. Regarding the decision to call Austin home, Rodriguez is quoted as saying: “As a filmmaker and founder of El Rey Network, I can’t imagine a more iconic and inspiring location for our production headquarters or for the filming of our upcoming projects.”

Brad Burton, CSA and Kimberly Williams-Burton, CSA are the owners and Casting Directors behind Burton Casting, Burton Casting is located in Austin, Texas but cast commercials, films, industrials and print projects throughout the entire state.
