CHICAGO FIRE/PD Crossover Shooting Through Next Week
March 5, 2014 by Mike McNamara
It's a team effort for Dick Wolf's two hit series CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO PD. Shooting is currently underway for a two-part, crossover storyline revolving around a terrorist attack on Chicago. According to executive producer Dick Wolf, the storyline was inspired by the Oklahoma City and Boston Marathon bombings.
Here are the basics: FIRE frontman Lt. Matthew Casey (played by Jesse Spencer) will happen to be on the scene when the terrorist attack occurs and will spring into action to rescue the survivors. PD's Sgt. Hank Voight (played by Jason Beghe) and his crew join the fray to help the FBI find the terrorists behind the attack.
"Today is one of the biggest production days we’ll ever have on the show,” said FIRE producer John Roman last Friday during an on-set interview with the Chicago Tribune's Luis Gomez. “It’s going to be humongous: Fireworks, smoke, air mortars, dust clouds and 250 extras. Sadly, people now know what a terrorist attack looks like and it’s our job to recreate that look so it resonates."
“We’re giving you horror, shock and awe,” Roman said. “You’re going to be angry and it’s going to make you want Voight to nail those (expletive).” Roman also added that one character “will be in peril” during the storyline, but didn’t specify.
It's the second crossover for CHICAGO PD, following its successful partnering with LAW & ORDER: SVU, in a storyline involving a serial killer and rapist who began his spree in New York before heading to Chicago. The episode filmed in November and aired last week to solid ratings for CHICAGO PD (2.0/6 in 18-49, 7.7 million viewers overall), up 11% from its February 11 episode. You can watch these episodes here.
The PD/FIRE storyline is set to begin on the April 29 episode of CHICAGO FIRE.
