DeNiro Thriller a No Go in Chicago? Update on IDOL'S EYE

Earlier this year, SCREEN received word that the feature IDOL'S EYE, starring Oscar winner Robert DeNiro and TWILIGHT heartthrob Robert Pattinson, was looking to Chicago for the bulk of its shooting this fall. Makes sense, since this heist-action-thriller is based in Chicago. However, recent online reports confirm the bulk of this film will now take place in Toronto, with the likelihood of some shooting in Chicago for externals.

For several months, there were some doubts as to whether or not the project would be filmed at all. I had heard rumblings that the financing might in doubt and also that producer Scott Lambert of Film 360 had left the project. Fortunately, the production appears to be back on solid ground; unfortunately, the bulk of the production heads to Canada.

Director is heralded French filmmaker Olivier Assayas, whose 2010 five-hour terrorism biopic CARLOS premiered at the Cannes Film Festival to rave reviews. Assayas also wrote the screenplay for IDOL'S EYE, previously titled HUBRIS, which is based on the 2007 Playboy article called "Boosting The Big Tuna." The story follows a group of thieves who rob a man who turns out to be Chicago mafia boss Tony "Big Tuna" Accardo.

Shooting is set to begin in Toronto on October 20th and will run through December. I'll keep you posted as more dates and details come available regarding Chicago dates for this feature.
