Swanberg Comedy Sold to Orchard, Sony
January 30, 2015 by Mike McNamara
Greetings from Park City! I just bumped into Chicago filmmaker Joe Swanberg (on my way out of the world premiere of his wife Kris's wonderful Chicago-made feature UNEXPECTED) and Joe mentioned he just received word his feature DIGGING FOR FIRE, also out at Sundance this week, has been acquired by The Orchard and Sony Pictures International.
The Orchard has acquired North American rights for the comedy for a reported $2 million while Sony Pictures International has paid an undisclosed amount for foreign rights.
The film co-stars Jake Johnson (who wrote the script with Swanberg), Rosemarie DeWitt, Orlando Bloom, Brie Larson, Sam Rockwell, Anna Kendrick and Mike Birbiglia. The supporting cast includes Sam Elliott, Judith Light, Ron Livingston, Melanie Lynskey Jenny Slate, Timothy Simons and Jane Adams.
DIGGING FOR FIRE follows the discovery of a bone and a gun which sends a husband (Johnson) and wife (DeWitt) — each full of doubts about their future and anxiety about the present — on separate adventures over the course of a weekend.
Next up for the Swanberg's here at Sundance: Kris, Joe and their adorable three-year-old son Jude will head to the Awards Reception Saturday night to cheer for Kris's film UNEXPECTED, which is in the U.S. Dramatic Competition. I'll be there as well with a cowbell or cheering device of some sort... and as always, I'll keep you posted!
