Green Light for CHICAGO MED
May 4, 2015 by Mike McNamara
It's official: CHICAGO MED is finally a go.
CHICAGO MED, a second spinoff of CHICAGO FIRE from producer Dick Wolf, will join the schedule next season, with Oliver Platt and S. Epatha Merkerson, a regular on Wolf's original Law & Order series, among the stars heading up the cast. The CHICAGO MED pickup gives Dick Wolf four drama series on NBC next season, three in the CHICAGO FIRE franchise plus LAW & ORDER: SVU, marking the first time since 2005 that Wolf has had four series simultaneously airing on the network.
There had been quite a bit of excitement surrounding CHICAGO MED around this time last year but the series was tabled by NBC. However, with the success of the subsequent seasons of CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO PD, prospects for the series were renewed and an "embedded CHICAGO MED pilot" served as episode #319 for CHICAGO FIRE, bowing on April 7th.
The CHICAGO FIRE/CHICAGO MED episode entitled "I Am the Apocalypse" (2.0/6 in 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) delivered an impressive 25% boost from its prior original on March 17 and won its hour among the Big Four in 18-49 by a healthy 53% margin over CBS’ PERSON OF INTEREST, leading to industry-wide optimism that this spinoff would finally go to series.
So what night will CHICAGO MED air? And if you enjoyed the three-way FIRE-PD-SVU crossovers, should you be brimming with anticipation for a four-way with CHICAGO MED? We'll have answers soon and as always, I'll keep you posted!
