The Singer Brothers and Their IMPERFECTIONS
May 11, 2015 by Mike McNamara
The talented Singer brothers are set to begin principal photography on their debut feature IMPERFECTIONS in Chicago on May 18th. Producer Jonathan and writer-director David re-team after the success of their short ADVANTAGE: WEINBERG, which was selected for the Emerging Filmmaker Showcase at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. The cast for this comedy/suspense film set in Chicago’s Jewelers’ Row includes Virginia Kull (BOARDWALK EMPIRE), Ed Begley Jr., Marilu Henner, Chelcie Ross, Zach Mcgowan (SHAMELESS), Ashton Holmes (A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE) and Jerry Mackinnon (EMPIRE).
"We’ve been working on honing this story to the tightest place it can be for a year and a half," commented Jonathan. "David makes changes to the script almost everyday. We got a lot of confidence when we showed our short film ADVANTAGE: WEINBERG at Cannes, and we got the itch to try something a little more complex. From a producer standpoint, everything I have learned in this business has lead me to this point. I’ve never been more ready."
IMPERFECTIONS centers on the story of Cassidy Harper (played by Kull), a struggling actress sleeping on her mother’s (Henner) couch and grinding out auditions, worrying that any chance at stardom may have already passed her by. Desperate to save enough money to move to Hollywood, she takes a job working as a runner for her mother’s boyfriend (Begley Jr.), an importer in Chicago’s diamond district. When she realizes the money is trickling in too slowly for her to put a stake together, she conspires with the owner’s son to stage a robbery and keep the diamonds - using her former boyfriend as the fall guy. Their hare-brained scheme only gets more complicated when she realizes she’s still in love with her volatile ex.
IMPERFECTIONS has pulled together a pretty perfect production team, headed by Christina Varotsis (Producer), Andrew Wehde (Director of Photography), Adri Siriwatt (Production Designer), Lana McAllister (Costume Designer), Erica Daniels (Casting Director) and Dana Scott (UPM).
The brothers have enjoyed quite a bit of success outside of the indie film scene as well. David is a celebrated composer, scoring productions the likes of Broadway’s AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY - winner of five Tony Awards and the Pulitzer Prize - and this year's revival of John Steinbeck's OF MICE AND MEN, starring James Franco and Chris O’Dowd. Jonathan and his production company Coin Operated Films continue to stay busy in the advertising world, producing commercial spots for GrubHub, Belk, Triscuit and Maurices.
Last but not least... family dynamics can be tricky, so Jonathan, any challenges making a movie with your brother? "Siblings collaborating on a project can be complicated, but so far this has been a great experience for both of us. We often look at each other and say, “can you believe this is actually happening? Can you believe these amazing actors want to be in this movie?” Our mom started the TV department at Stewart Talent and our dad was the president of an ad agency in town and if they were alive today we hope they’d be proud of us."
