August 19, 2016 by Mike McNamara
HAROLD AND PARKER GO TO COLUMBUS: John Cho, Parker Posey and Rory Culkin are starring in the drama COLUMBUS, currently filming in Columbus, Indiana. Cho, best known for his work in HAROLD & KUMAR GO TO WHITE CASTLE and STAR TREK, plays the estranged son of a prominent architectural critic. Indie maven Posey plays a former student who’s dating Cho’s character’s father.
COLUMBUS marks the feature film directorial debut of South Korean director Kogonada, who is best known for his visual artistry and film criticism. “After visiting the town, I felt an immediate sense for a film that would take place there, which would implicitly explore the promise of modernism (an ongoing quest for me),” Kogonada said in a statement. “The story revolves around a man and young woman from opposite sides of the world, each mourning the potential loss of a parent.”
WRAPPING TODAY: MERCURY IN RETROGRADE wraps today in the Rogers Park neighborhood of Chicago, finishing up 16 days of shooting, nine of which took place in a cabin near Saugatuck, Michigan. Post-production begins immediately, with an early 2017 festival run kickoff in sight.
"This is a film trying to portray different types of relationships," Producer Shane Simmons told SCREEN. "I was fortunate to act alongside an extremely talented and experienced cast who went far above and beyond to bring compassion and authenticity to the characters. I learned so much from them."
Simmons also balanced producer duties while hopping in front of the camera as well, joining the talented cast that includes Steppenwolf ensemble member Alana Arenas; Sundance alums Roxane Mesquida and Najarra Townsend, Jack Newell (OPEN TABLES), Kevin Wehby (COOL APOCALYPSE) and Andrew Sensenig (UPSTREAM COLOR). "While pulling double duty as producer and cast member, I was in a very new and conflicted position on this one," Simmons added. "There were times when I had to sit back and let my fellow producer, Kevin Wright, and our extremely hard-working production team do their thing--when I was antsy to jump in--but they nailed it."
