PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT Pilot Breaks Ground Today

A fully independent television series, shot entirely in Chicago? It's the natural next step for Chicago's burgeoning television production scene, which has been buoyed by wildly successful major network shows EMPIRE, CHICAGO FIRE and CHICAGO PD. That truly independent series may have arrived in town in the form of PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT, from co-creator Angie Gaffney and a talented troupe of collaborators, and they're beginning their twelve-day shoot all over the city as we speak.

On top of being a potentially landmark series for Chicago, PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT is also a critical next step for Gaffney's production company Black Apple Media. "PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT has been developed, written, financed, cast, and shot entirely in Chicago and this is also the first independent TV show that Black Apple has developed from the beginning," Gaffney told SCREEN. "We've been working closely with Digital Hydra and Chicago Media Angels to get it off the ground... Chicago Film Office who has been instrumental in supporting production."

Gaffney continued, "We're thrilled with this script, which speaks to socially and culturally relevant topics, especially here in Chicago."

PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT tells the story of three Chicago cops butting heads with cop, criminal, and politician alike in an endless crusade to protect the citizens of Chicago Public Housing in the late 1980s.

The pilot stars Chris Boykin, Ira Amyx, and Kamal Bolden, featuring EMPIRE's Antoine McKay, Steppenwolf ensemble member Caroline Neff, former SIRENS star Emily Peterson, Cedric Young, and DuShon Monique Brown. Directed by Chicago native Dan Willis, created by Patrick Wimp, Angie Gaffney and Ted Reilly of Chicago Media Angels.

Shooting continues all over Chicago through December 19th. Gaffney and her team are looking for a completed pilot by next spring, with a release date soon to follow. As PUBLIC HOUSING UNIT makes its way to potential networks and hopefully into a fully independent television series for Chicago... as always, I'll keep you posted!
