Chicago's New TV Series for NBC
September 29, 2016 by Mike McNamara
Yet another TV pilot has been picked up to series and is currently shooting in Chicago... and this one is 100% homegrown. Filming for eight episodes of the half-hour comedy SHRINK is underway throughout the city, with creators Tim Baltz and Ted Tremper (a producer on NY-based THE DAILY SHOW WITH TREVOR NOAH when he's not shooting SHRINK) at the helm, with Baltz in front of the camera and Tremper behind it.
SHRINK began as a short film/pilot shot in Chicago back in 2012 by Baltz and Tremper; the film went on to win Best Comedy Pilot as well as the critics award at the 2012 New York TV Festival. Jump ahead to August 2016 when Seeso, NBCUniversal’s comedy subscription service, announced a series order for SHRINK, and here we are entering October with eight episodes shooting in Chicago.
So what's SHRINK all about? The series stars Baltz as a recent medical school graduate who loses his residency and finds himself unemployed with a half million dollars of student loan debt. With his dream of becoming a ‘real doctor’ dashed, he discovers a loophole to becoming a therapist by recording 1,920 supervised clinical hours, which he begins by soliciting unorthodox patients from Craigslist and conducts the free sessions in his parents’ garage.
Joining Baltz and Tremper are Second City veteran Emily Wilson on the writing team and Chuck Martin of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT as showrunner, Chicago's PR Casting and production manager Dana Scott.
Filming continues in Chicago through the end of October. As always, I'll keep you posted!
