Sony's Miyamoto Joins Chicago Feature

In an industry that once seemed to favor New York & Los Angeles, Midwest screenwriter Ken Miyamoto has been hired on to write for Justin Jackola (pictured left) and JJack Productions upcoming feature film HUNTING GOD.

For most industry veterans, it had traditionally seemed most success was found by moving to the coasts. For Miyamoto, however, who has been in the industry for over 12 years, he’s lived both sides of that life: working as a studio liaison for Sony Studios and as a script reader & story analyst for Sony Pictures out in Los Angeles, as well as a freelance writer here in the Midwest. But, according to Ken, he is finding most of his success as a screenwriter living in Wisconsin.

“Geography isn’t as important as it was decades ago when you had to live in Los Angeles... these dreams, whether you’re a screenwriter, director, producer, actor, or crew member, can come true in the Midwest, and it’s only getting better,” said Miyamoto.

HUNTING GOD director Jackola and Miyamoto met at UW Madison’s Writers Institute, where both were on the same pitch panel together. Jackola pitched his previous project, titled ASSASSIN'S JOURNEY, to Ken, and the two began their working relationship. When Jackola had the story concept for Hunting God, he spoke with several writers in Chicago, but ended up working with Miyamoto again because of his experience on the previous script.

Previously, Miyamoto has had a development deal with Lionsgate, as well as writing assignments with Larry Levinson Productions, including the produced miniseries BLACKOUT, which starred Anne Heche, Sean Patrick Flanery, Billy Zane, James Brolin, Haylie Duff, and others. “Both his backend knowledge and writing is great. On top of that, we just get along as if we’ve known each other our entire lives,” added Jackola.

As for what drew Miyamoto to this project? “The challenge of melding the faith-based genre to suspense horror thrillers, I don’t believe it has been done yet... at least not in the way that we’re planning.”

HUNTING GOD is scheduled to film in Illinois the first three weeks of October 2017.
