Deluxe companies Beast, Company 3, and Method Studios, as well as Periscope Post & Audio in Chicago recently collaborated with actress Gabourey Sidibe on her directorial debut THE TALE OF FOUR, a short film created as part of Refinery29’s Shatterbox Anthology.
Inspired by Nina Simone’s song “Four Women,” the film tells the overlapping stories of four neighbors who are connected through their quest for love, agency, justice, and redemption. Beast editor Dean Gonzalez worked closely with Sidibe during pre-production to establish the framing of particular shots and the best way to incorporate specific effects in post.
Periscope Post & Audio provided the audio work the film. John Wong was the re-recording mixer and sound designer, Jeremy Zussman was sound editor and Kaitlyn Heffron cut the dialogue.
“It was absolutely fabulous working with Gabby, who brought an amazing spirit and enthusiasm to this project every step of the way,” said Gonzalez. “Our whole team was grateful to have the opportunity to help her tell these stories.”
After the shoot, Gonzalez cut the film on a concise schedule, including several sessions in the bay with Sidibe, producer Lisa Cortés, and producer/co-writer Kia Perry. Once the cut was locked, Ryan Wood at Method Studios completed the online edit, adding effects such as police lights as needed; and Tyler Roth at Company 3 delivered the color grade.
